# MySQL

Query MySQL from a native Codon application, or compile a calculation into a MySQL user-defined function. The client handles application-side queries and updates; a server function executes as part of a SQL expression.

[Client applications](https://platform.exaloop.io/db/mysql/client/) connect to an ordinary server without an extension. [Server functions](https://platform.exaloop.io/db/mysql/functions/) require permission to install native code. Both target Oracle MySQL 8.0 or newer; consult the [compatibility table](https://platform.exaloop.io/db/reference/#compatibility) before choosing a platform. MariaDB is not supported.
